According to ABC 7 New York, a wrongful death lawsuit is being filed on behalf of a beloved school principal. Dr. Derrick Nelson was donating his bone marrow to a boy fighting cancer when he experienced complications with anesthesia. Dr. Nelson died from these complications, which his family believes were a result of anesthesiologic medical malpractice. They are now seeking justice for their loss through a wrongful death lawsuit. Dr. Nelson was an officer in the US Army Reserve and a principal at Westfield High School in New Jersey. Dr. Nelson’s fiancée and the mother of his child filed the wrongful death lawsuit on his behalf. According to their attorney, Nelson’s oxygen saturation level fell lower than it was supposed to at the beginning of the procedure, but the medical professionals chose to continue the procedure anyway. According to medical records, his levels fell extremely low, to 31%, before he was given oxygen.
Dr. Nelson was loved by his students, community, and family who are all very saddened by his passing.
