Trucker falls asleep at the wheel?
As you can see from the attached link, a tractor-trailer driver who struck six motorcyclists on the side of I-85 in Greensboro, North Carolina has been charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. See link: http://myfox8.com/2015/07/20/tractor-trailer-driver-charged-in-fatal-wreck-on-i-85-due-in-court/
It is alleged that the driver fell asleep at the wheel and struck the motorcyclists at 80-85 miles per hour. The motorcyclists were on the shoulder repairing a vehicle. Two of the motorcyclists were killed and four others were severely injured. The cyclists were all from Virginia and Maryland and on their way to a bike rally.
Long-haul drivers falling asleep at the wheel is unfortunately a continuing hazard on our roads. Even though federal rules limit the amount of time a driver can drive without rest, there may be an incentive for drivers to press further to enhance their pay. This, unfortunately, comes at the risk of safety to others.
