New DC clergy sexual abuse allegations led to one Catholic priest’s arrest
DC clergy sexual abuse may occur when priests use their position of authority to take advantage of those who trust them.
DC Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Washington Post
According to the Washington Post, one DC priest, Urbano Vazquez, has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor. The police report describes this abuse as ‘sexually touching a 9-year-old and a woman.’ Previously, three people have accused him of abusing them as teenagers. Vazquez was charged last month with child sexual abuse. Following these incidences, the Washington Archdiocese removed Vazquez from his position at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart, a predominantly Latino parish in DC. Vazquez is set to appear in court on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, priests and clergy can sometimes use their positions of authority to take advantage of those who trust them. When this leads to sexual abuse, it is important that victims come forward. Oftentimes, when a victim comes forward about an incidence of sexual abuse, it can empower others to come forward as well. When these offenders are held accountable for their actions, it can prevent similar incidences from occurring in the future, and victims can obtain the justice they deserve.
